*cross fingers* first post

Ok. I've layed low. I've been crazy busy at work and I've queued up some baby knitting for a short (~2 month) work relocation. While travelling in LA I found THE YARN at this great yarn store.
And last night I cast on! I'm just a bit in... we'll see how the pattern turns out. I'm not committed yet. I love how the yarn is knitting up. It reminds me of grapes on the vine, actually, with the green much greenier than it looks in the picture I linked. But as I started working on the pattern I saw the words "This pattern is perfect for solid yarn"... whoops! Welcome to my short attention span. :) If the pattern starts to flow, I'll post a picture. Hooray! The start of the the socks! I'm so excited....

Finally one nearly done

Bear with me as this is my first post to Sockapalooza 4. I would normally just go to the pligg and attach my website as a link, but my site is not just about my knitting but that of a couple friends so I don't feel comfortable putting them out there on the pligg without permission. So my first post will be here on the Sockapalooza 4 website. Hopefully people are still checking it out. I originally bought Reynolds Sea Wool in Pale Pink to knit socks from the newest IK by Veronik Avery. But after some work and some thinking I determined my first knee highs should not be for someone who I have limited measurements on. So, on to a computer search and I ended up with the Snicket Socks from MagKnits. I briefly thought I would jump on the Monkey Bandwagon but thought the cabling would show off the delicate yarn better. I am really liking the results and hope my pal likes them too! I hope to finish them completely in the next week or two as I have summer term coming up next week and expect to be too busy to get much knitting done! Fingers crossed that I can stay on schedule.

Help!

I would love to make the Springgrass Socks for my SockPal, but it seems to me like the pattern is written toe-up. I have not done toe-up socks and I don't think now is a good time for me to learn how!

My question is, can I do these socks top-down? And, if so, what, if any, modifications need to be made to the pattern?

Thanks!

Size Matters...

Hi sock pal. I know that "everybody says" size doesn't matter, it's all what you do with it - but I think in this case, what "everybody says" is a bunch of hooey!

You see, I'm knitting you knee socks, and it's the first pair of knee socks I've ever knitted, and I'm kinda-sorta making the plain-jane pattern up with math and gauge and your measurements as I go along. Oh, and it's handspun too, so that adds an additional wrinkle.

This is the third (or is it fourth) time I knitted a bit, got angsty about size, ripped it out and tried again. So far - well, you can see for yourself. The gauge/stitches per inch match up math-wise with your measurements, but I'm still worried because my own leg measurements are about 1.5 - 2 inches larger than yours in calf and under the knee, and this socks fits me - it's a really snug fit, but it does fit. Should I start over again?

What do ya'll think? Am I alright with what I've got? I keep telling myself "it's better to be too big than to be too small". The yarn is a 14 wpi two-ply superwash merino (Sock Hop from Crown Mountain Farms in "I Got You Babe") knitted on a size 1 lace Addis with the magic loop method.

Soon I'm going to have to start figuring out what kind of heel to use... oy!

Dear pal,

sockapalooza

How do you like your sock-in-progress? I love working with this Sophie's toes yarn and the pattern is just a dream to knit.

greatings from your pal overseas,

ps. Could my pal please leave me a message on my blog (http://nebbus.spaces.live.com/). I haven't heard from you yet and I'm getting a little bit worried.

Second post today ??

Will blogger let me post a second time today ??

Just wanted to show the actual state of my knitting...
I had to knit the toe few times to get it free of holes ... i'm not a big fan of toe up socks.
What's your way of knitting short row toes ? Wrapped stitches or YO? How do you fix holes ??

I love the pattern - Anne did a great job ;o)

Ready... Steady ... Go !

Finally ....
It took me a very long time to find the PERFECT yarn and the PERFECT pattern...
I was thinking about something IRISH...
Colour - Green
Pattern - something with grass-like texture (no, I didn't think about knitting green sheep)
My choice:
Yarn - Blue Moon Fiber Arts lightweight in Jade
Pattern - Teosinte socks by Anne from www.knitspot.com
And the result -

(That picture was taken yesterday when I was hoping blogger would let me post without any problems... well... I finished sock No1 and started the second. This pattern is super easy to remember and quick to knit and the yarn ...)

Andy McKee

This guy, Andy McKee, is pretty amazing. I don't think I've ever seen a guitar played like that. Check out his other videos too. He uses an unusual guitar in some of the other pieces, too.

MIA sock pals: idea for future Sockapaloozas

As one of the (apparently many) people who haven't heard from their pals, I'm wondering if there's a way to address this issue along with the problem of folks never receiving socks at the end.

For future Sockapaloozas, maybe there could be a requirement that you look up and contact your sock pal within a certain amount of time and that the sock pal has to at least respond and say, "Yes I'm out here" . . . and people who don't do this get removed from the group. Then all of the waiting folks could get reassigned to other waiting folks. The idea is not intended to be at all mean or ruin anybody's fun, but just provide some reassurance that socks will materialize (pun intended) and appreciated. I don't want to invent more work for Alison, but I imagine that it's work to try to find knitters to knit extra socks for those who didn't get any when August 2 has come and gone, so this might actually be easier in the long run.

I realize that communication between pals doesn't guarantee that socks will be made. I think it does demonstrate some level of commitment to the project, though, as well as creating a level of accountability to an actual person.

What do folks (especially Alison, who has to manage the logistics after all) think?

I'm also thinking that suggesting that people create an "anonymous" e-mail address for Palooza purposes might be part of the problem, since if people don't remember to check this (possibly new) account, they won't be notified of the availability of their pal assignments and then it's "out of sight, out of mind". I'm not sure what the solution to this problem is - maybe suggesting that people provide their usual email address for messages from Sockapalooza and the pal who is knitting for them, and reserving the "anonymous" address for communications to the pal they are knitting for.

Sorry if this isn't clear. It feels like it may appear more complicated in writing than the concept that's floating around in my mind. These are just ideas, but it feels like they might head off some bigger problems now that Sockapalooza is getting so big! I'd love to hear others' comments.

Sock pal, where art thou?

I hate to join the worry party, but I haven't heard from my pal, either. I'll admit that I'm concerned . . . my giftee (sockee?) told me that she got "stiffed" last year. At least I can rescue her from that fate this year!

I'm going to sign off now and see if I can actually post today!

Socks are started

I've picked a pattern, selected a nice soft yarn in colours that my pal has indicated she likes, and have started my first ever Sock Exchange sock -- I hope my pal likes it. The yarn I am using is the blue one on the right (Garnstudios Fabel) (#677 in the link) ... the other 2 colours are for me (#901, #902 in the chart)

So far so good, I am liking the way it is looking, and the pattern is not too difficult to learn the rhythm of. I am knitting a Cookie pattern, and was a little nervous that I might not "catch it" but I have it under control now, and am cruising right along.

I don't want to say too much yet ... I am terrible with secrets, and am scared i will blurt out who I am knitting for, and where it is going (although with 1,000 people taking part, I can probably give out a few hints without risk of being figured out! hahha!)

Slip stitch patterns?

I have finally returned from my trip. Contacted both up and down stream people - yippee! Because of my knitttee's preferences, I'm thinking of a slip stitch pattern to mix up the designs. Any quick tutorials, or nice patterns, references, etc out there to help? Design isn't a strong suit of mine - only designed one pair of socks before, so any hand holding would be appreciated.

Everyone seems wonderfully busy with Sockalooza. The excitement and energy is wonderful. It is great that we are such a wide flung group of knitters. But that is also the sad part - we won't ever be able to meet together to exchange gifts - but what a mental image that is!

My Rockin' Pal

My pal is the best! Already she surprised me with a great card and SNB journal to help me with my knitterly ideas. Thanks Sock Monkey!!

Got a little gold sock yarn to spare?

I am thinking of making scarlet socks for my pal with a picot cuff in gold, but I don't have any gold yarn and would rather not buy some for just this little bit, so I thought I'd throw this request out there. If you have some fingering weight gold-colored sock yarn leftovers you'd be willing to send me, email [address removed because I got some gold yarn! Thanks, fellow knitter!]

I'm willing to pay shipping but I don't have any cash in my Paypal account, and the credit card fees probably aren't worth it for this small amount. We can work something out!

I got my yarn

My yarn arrived in the mail yesterday (I spent most of last night petting it) - now to decide on the pattern. I think something with a bit of lace, but not too complicated.

a belated hi (again)

i have had ZERO luck posting here. i tried when we had known blogger issues and gave up and have tried a couple more times, maybe this one will work! (I blame no one but blogger, FYI. ;-))

so hi from sunny and less smoky florida! this is my first sockapalooza, but my 2nd sock exchange (not including the wee one,) the first being sock wars. I was assassinated 1-1/3 socks into it, but it was great fun and I loved all my sock pals! I've made contact with my recipient and she seems great too, I'm excited to be knitting for her! Monkey seems to be a trend here and a local knitter friend (I would link to her here, but she's in sockapalooza too and I fear I will somehow jeopardize anonymity so I will skip it, but she's great and her monkeys are absolutely fabulous, trust me) made them recently and I have been drooling over them, so I might just go that route! Finally decided on yarn, but having issues choosing a pattern now, of course!

I'm going to leave it at that in fear this won't work. Oh, my secret sock pal contacted me too, so everything is chill in sockapaloozaville on this end. Happy knitting everyone!!!! :-)

((((echoes))))

Sigh. I've emailed the person I'm knitting for...but she hasn't responded. Nor have I heard from my pal.

Are you there??

(folks, please check your emails!)

The echoes are beginning to be disturbing.

Finally Started

It took me forever, but I finally decided what to make for my sock pal. The yarn is Twinkletoes "cedar frost" out of my stash - the colors are hard to see but navy, turquoise, pine and sienna. The pattern is by Treesa who is one of the designers from Sock Madness (a sock knitting contest I was eliminated from - this is one of the later patterns that I was dying to try.) The cuffs have lace and cables although they are hard to see in the picture because I'm not so good with a camera.

Late to the Worry Train...

Hi everyone...I know by now everyone is over at the Pligg, which is so novel it makes me feel ol (I'm 24!) but I thought I'd ask...is there anyone else who still hasn't heard from EITHER pal? Am I the only one?

I let a few days go by, then a week, then more. I've emailed my pal and commented on her blog (secretly, of course) but I haven't heard from her or from the person who has me. To quote myself in my latest (sock heavy!) post, I'm kinda feeling like a looooza!

I have yarn, a pattern, I'm raring to go, but I'd really feel better if I heard from at least one pal =/

And so this isn't a total pity party, here are some socks I just finished, details at the previously mentioned post.

destash: unicorn hair sock yarn

Hey there. I'm almost done with my first pair of
socks ever. See pics here:
http://www.knitoncastoff.blogspot.com.
I must say I'm a bit put off by sock yarn prices. As
in, "oh my sweet [insert appropriate noun here],
$20-$40 a pair??? Ack!"
I can say that I really like socks, but heaven forbid
I should ever use anything but sport weight yarn.
What is it about sock yarn that makes it so expensive?
Is it the color? Or that it is tiny? Is it spun by
unionized faeries out of sustainably harvested unicorn
down?
Where do I go to get affordable sock yarn? Is it
worth it to even look on the internet, given shipping
costs? Can someone with very little disposable income
even consider a sock yarn addiction? Eeek!

need some help please.

Hi,

I am in search of cotton or cotten blend sock yarn. I have never knit
cotton before. Does any one have yarn recommendations? I'm looking for
solid colors... I've looked at a few (like Panda Cotton & Meilenweit
Cotton, just to name a couple) but am overwhelmed by the choices and
various blends. (I've looked at Grumperina's non-wooly list too...)

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Blogger

Um, excuse me while I kick blogger in the Arse....It posted my post to the wrong blog.

Where is My Sock Pal?

First, I haven't yet heard from the person who is knitting my Sockapalooza socks. Should I be afraid? I know I am definitely worried. If you haven't emailed your partner don't leave him or her in suspense. Just let them know you exist. I've emailed the person I am knitting for and she has replied.

The next news is that I’ve decided to make Monkey from Knitty for my partner using Lorna’s Laces Shepard Sock in color number 74, Mother Lode. It seems like a lot of us are making it. Here is a picture at three repeats. I’m a little past that now. I’m using two circulars and it is working out well so far. Of course, it is a long time to August and I may decide on something else. But for now I’m having fun with these.

Socks yarn update

I finally found something suitable for my Sockpal. This sockyarn is from Kauni, is very soft and easy to knit with, and as my pal loves blues and lilacs I think she will be happy with it :)
I have not hear from the person who will knit for me so far. And I'll like to. So if you read this drop by and say hi :)

Happy knitting :)

Is my Pal out there?

Just wondering. I hope somebody will be knitting for moonlight knitter! I haven't heard. But I will be starting the socks for my Pal soon. Ordered the yarn today!

NOW I see...

what all the fuss was about. It took me forever to get blogger to let me in here, too. Nothing to report...just thought I'd say that I finally was allowed access.
Tanya

Hello? Hello? Calling Sock Pal for Missmaliceknits....

Still silent as a mouse - hope to hear from you soon!
Alice

R U there ?

Still no word from my other sock pal. Is there anyone knitting a pair of socks for me?
At least the person I'm knitting for has no problem replying to my emails. I'll be casting on this weekend - pictures soon!

New sock yarn and new pattern

Hello all!
I am so excited about getting started! I have decided to use sock yarn from my stash because it fits my pal perfectly! I am trying a new sock pattern called easy lace from sock Calendar book. I am enjoying it and its easier then I thought it was going to be.
The sock yarn is a new one too it is Knitpicks Dancing sock yarn and its a dream to knit with!

As a new sock knitter, I was wondering , is there yarn that i should stay away from for my sock knitting urges?

I changed my mind...

Hello,
Well, I bought the yarn and I had a pattern that I thought would work and I determined that size 3 needle would be needed for this pattern ... However... I cast on tonight, just to see if it truly would work and it didn't. I have to go down a needle size and pick a new pattern. So the search begins again.
~Saffron

Hmmm....

So, I'm having a hard time deciding what yarn and pattern to use. Being a beginner sock-knitter, I don't want something too difficult, and being on a budget, I'm looking for yarn that's not too pricey. But I still want to do something great for my sock pal! So, I'm busy searching for bargains and patterns and what will work together... I have a few patterns that I like (I'm leaning toward Quill Lace on knitty- it seems like something I can do, and I'm ready for the challenge!), but need to find the right yarn. Somthing that seems extravagent without being too expensive. Anyone have any suggestions?

Still no contact w/ sock pals....

I've emailed my pal, but haven't heard back.... and have heard nothing from the person who got me... If you're out there, Let Me Know!

too many, too few? -- sock preferences

I have been reading all of the fun choosing of yarns and patterns on the pligg, and it has been making me think about the preferences I put up. I wanted to give enough information that I provided guidance, but not so much that my sock-knitter would feel pressure to knit something they didn't like or wouldn't enjoy. I even said that I would love knee socks (and I would--I like to wear skirts as long as I can), despite many worries that my pal would feel pressured into a whole lot more knitting than she might have signed up for. A pair of knee highs is like 1.5 or 2 pairs (I have small feet and long legs). But maybe she was looking for an excuse to knit knee highs which she would never wear! So I put it in my preferences.

I am having fun determining the perfect yarn, and letting designs swirl around my head for my own pal, but it is challenging to interpret the preferences. If someone likes certain colors and says they are a simple, non-fussy kind of gal, does that mean solid colors, handpainted, or stripes? I don't know.

The reason for this post was mostly to say, that as a first time swapper, I am so thrilled that someone is knitting me socks, and I want only positive, delightful, seeking of the "perfect" yarn and pattern for my pal, not anxious "will this be good enough" seeking. Unless I get a pair of socks in the one color I dislike, and big enough for an elephant, I am going to show this pair of socks off to every person on the street when I wear them and say "See, someone knit a pair of socks Just For Me!"

Let the fun continue!

False Start

I was so excited to see the sock assignments go out. I went to my sock buddy's blog and poked around a bit to see what sort of colors and patterns they might enjoy. After skulking around for a while I thought I had a good idea what they would like, and even better I was pretty sure I had yarn and a pattern on hand that would work.

I started knitting on the sock I had picked out. The yarn, Regia Bamboo, and pattern, Pomatomous, are working well together but I don't think they are the best combo for my sock pal. Oh well, I'm going to keep knitting on the sock; it will end up being a Christmas present.

As for my sock pals socks, I bought some more yarn and have a couple of patterns in mind. Hopefully things will work better this time.

finally!

Hello from a French Canadian ! Finally, I can post! Didnt receive any message from the gal who'll knit for me unfortunatly... My pal is living somewhere up north so I chose a 100% wool and a cute pattern. Oh , btw, I blog here ... http://www.blueligne.blogspot.com/

Im knitting the first sock ( frogged it twice ) . It is so fun to knit something for somebody that you didnt know at all! Im very careful and I take the time, I want NO mistakes.

Alison says "No worries!"

It was cool to get a comment from Alison. She was reassuring, of course. It would be fun to hear from my pals, but I guess this means I put plenty of info on my sign-up form. And I can definitely work with what my pal told me and what I can read in her blog archives.

So for now I will "go with the flow." In fact, that's the first pattern I tried for my pal. It's pretty, but too holey and airy for the fuzzy, wooly, wintery yarn I am using - Mountain Colors Bearfoot. Need to look for a pattern that gets its texture from something other than a bunch of YOs.

unknown pal??

I'm not sure if my Unknown pal has tried too contact me, I did'nt have a home comp. for a couple weeks and I went through all my emails and may have deleted it, please send me and email if i'm your pal so I know I at least have one LOL thanks :)

Pal?

Hey! I haven't heard from my upstream pal yet. Did I accidentally delete your message? I'm sorry if I did! Let me know if you tried to contact me, but didn't receive a response.

Sock Pal where are you?

Hi,
I wonder whether I have a sock pal out there? I'm so excited about sockapalooza and already contacted my pal and chatted with her.
I'm afraid that I deleted a message because I have so many spam mails.
So, maybe you can leave a message in my blog or send a mail.
Sorry for my impatience.

Haloscan Outted Me to my Pal!!

I am so upset right now. Even though I cleared the "website" field when I commented on my Spoilee's site, Haloscan INCLUDED MY WEBSITE. What can I do to fix this screw-up?? And no, Haloscan does not allow the commenter to delete what was said, even in Blogger.

Trying something new

I'm trying a Blogger option I've never used. Emailing my posts. But as, so far, I have been unable to blog here at all I had to try :)
My name is Pilar and I live in Gran Canaria, Spain. This is my 2nd Sockapalooza, I had so much fun with the first that I even organized a socks swap for spanish speaking knitters this year.

This is my blog:

And just in case you happened to be around and feel for coming by, our stitch and bitch blog.

Happy knitting :)

Sock Yarn Purchased for S4!

Did I STOP at purchasing enough yummy Koigu yarn in an awesome colorway (can't tell you!) for my sock pal?...NO! Add a skein of Anne Schaffer yarn, some doodads, a great skin softener lotion in a wonderful scent, a felted bag pattern...Yikes! Time to stay home and get these socks on my dpns!! :)
I'd love to hear from whoever has me...stop by my blog and say hi, or email me! Kris in NH

Should I be worried?

I haven't heard from either of my pals. I'm trying to decide if I should be worried. This is my first swap ever, so I really don't know what to expect.

I have emailed my giftee and left a comment on her blog, but she hasn't been there in a while - busy with school I think. I do have some beautiful yarn for her socks, and last night I cast on for the 1st sock. It was pretty late, so I need to go back today to see how it really looks.

I hope the Paloozer who got my name isn't hesitant because I don't have a blog. I check my email obsessively, and am excited to answer any questions she might have. I will stay over at this blog for now because I haven't figured out the "pligg" thing yet.

Calling Lywynderi

Hey there! You emailed me to say hi and to ask some questions about the socks you're knitting for me.....For some reason my reply to you keeps getting bounced back at me - apparently 550 relaying is denied for your email address (doesn't mean anything to me.....how about you?!). Is there another way I can contact you?

Liz

Hello?

Oh hello!

Knock knock
Who's there?
An interrupting cow.
An interrupting cow whomoooooooooo

Hello. This is my first time participating in Sockapalooza. In fact, this is my first official swappy thingy I ever joined and I'm very much looking forward it. All the excitement - oh my.

I do not believe my pal (whoever it may be) has claimed me yet. Whoever you are, I'm not concerned yet but I hope to hear from you soon before I start to think that this is nothing but a fragment of my imagination.

I do try to keep track of stuff I do and make at my pseudo blog (http://www.exartstudent.net/) even though I'm more likely to just update pictures on flickr.

I'm so thrilled to be part of this!

Are you my mother sock pal?

Hey all,

I just wanted to drop in and say hi to everyone: "Hi, everyone!"

I'm quite excited about Sockapalooooza 4 and all but I still haven't heard from my sock pal.

Is it you??

I'd like it if I could hear from you if you are. I've had some bad swap experiences before so I guess I'm a little nervous about stepping forth back in Swapland. Just a quick hi would do. Thanks!

And in case you missed it, I had a wee message for ya. :)

I overdyed yarn (I'm waiting for it to dry) using some of my Wilton Cake Gels (I love frosting!).  I'm not sure right now how well they both came out, but if my first glance when I was washing them this morning is any indication the blue and purple one is going to be stunning.  The other one might need a second round.

I think I'm going to test Bakerloo on myself for the moment and see how well it works up with a foot I already know.  Oh, and order yarn.  I registered an account at The Loopy Ewe, and I'm trying really hard to be good and not buy something before I get paid next week.  If I manage to wait until next Friday, it will be 50 days since I've bought yarn.  Fifty Days!  It feels like forever.  And Loopy Ewe is calling me to scratch the yarn-buying itch.

(And my husband keeps asking me if I can afford to buy yarn... *sigh*)

Flickr group!

I made a flickr Group where we can flash our yarns/works in progress/ etc. and eventually our package of goodness from our pals.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/sockapalooooza/

Go there, sign up, be happy.

I'm getting started!

Okay, the sun is shining in Boston. I have my yarn: Cherry Tree Hill in wonderful greens. My pal loves hand painted, so I hope she will like it. A cup of tea and a chair are waiting on the deck. I'm about to start my pals socks now. I haven't yet decided about the pattern. It's either going to be Monkey or a leaf pattern from a german website. I have some rounds of 1x1rib left before I have to make up my mind.
You will find the final decision here. My blog is only a few days old, so don't expect great things! My secret pal was the first one to leave a comment there. I was thrilled!

Finally!

Here's my second attempt at posting....I love that we broke Blogger. Knitters are powerful! I'm Suzanne, from Baltimore, MD. I've heard from both my pals (upstream and downstream) and am so excited! This is my first ever swap and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm hoping to pick out some luscious yarn for my pal this weekend at Maryland Sheep and Wool!

Hello! and a question

Hi everyone,

I'm one of the newbies to sock exchanges, and I am so excited about getting a pair of hand knit just for me socks.

Here's my question: my pal really needs machine washable socks, but I only hand wash my socks so I don't know what to use. I know that some yarns claim they are machine washable (like Cherry Tree Hill, which is one of my favorites), but I haven't been brave enough to put wool into the washing machine. Do any of you know a great, wool blend, yarn that machine washes like a champ?

Thanks!

Short Row heel/toe tutorial

I've put together a post full of tips on how to work the PGR short-row toe/heel. This is my preferred method of making socks, but it can be tricky in the beginning. Really, I just wanted to share my love for this book and method. Hope it's useful.

noob

Hey, I'm new here! Very excited about Sockapalooza! This is my first knitting swap. My swap pal emailed me and I emailed my swap pal (but I'm not sure if she got my email) so I'm raring to go.
I've tentatively decided on my yarn and pattern (mmm...scheming...)
I think I'll start knitting this week!

Also new

I'm also new in Sockapalooza. I have the pattern for my pal's sock already worked out, the only thing I have to find is suitable yarn ;-) I think it will be fun!

I'm a sockapalooza virgin

Actually, I'm any sort of knitted swap virgin. I participated in a letter swap organised by a knitter recently, but no actually knitting or knitting-related swaps under my belt - this is my first and I'm excited and nervous. I have no idea how this all works. Am I supposed to contact my sock pal secretly and ask questions? Do I drop hints? Help!

I've already been spying of course.

Also, I feel like the only girl out there who doesn't do pink! I've no problem knitting in pink, thankfully.

Glad we don't ship out 'til August as I've been working on a pair of socks for ages and might even get them done before the end of June.

Anyway, quite excited about selecting yarn, even if it is likely to be very girly yarn ;), and a pattern!

Howdy!

Hello from California! I'm really looking forward to making a sock and getting my second ever item hand knit for me! (I'm pretty much the only knitter I know.) I blog about knitting and other life stuff here: http://princessichi.blogspot.com/

Yay socks! Teresa

indecision...

...runs wild here. I actually have two ideas.
My first thought was an idea for a design for my pal's socks, but the more I think of it, and of what my summer's stacking up to be, I think I'll be looking for a pattern to work instead. Now If I can just decide on the yarn. Maybe I just need to stalk my pal a bit more.

Started a blog!

After poking around on so many people's cool blogs that I've found on here, I finally broke down and started one myself. I just started it Tuesday, so there isn't much on it yet--so much stuff for my poor brain to figure out. Check it out here if you want annastarzs.blogspot.com

Thanks all for being so inspiring!

Help me choose a pattern . . .

I'm pretty sure that I've picked out my yarn:

It's Sundara Yarn it's Caribbean over Light Blue fingering weight. I'm leaning towards a twisted stitch pattern, here are some I'm considering:

1 & 2: From Nancy Bush's Knitting on the Road: Conwy or Canal du Midi (also lovely in green here).

3: Bavarian Rockstar, also here.

4: Bavarian Twisted Stitch socks (on the Knitpicks site) from Cat Bordhi's Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles.

If anyone has feedback about these options, or similar alternatives, please let me know. The Canal du Midi is the front-runner, but I do waver when I look at other options! More lengthy reasoning for these choices (and another choice that I've pretty much ruled out) can be found on my blog. Thanks!

Hi!

I'm not sure if my last post went through or not.......blogger seems to be eating everything! I'm so excited to be in Sockapalooza this time around as I missed signing up last time. I just checked today to see if the matches were up, so if someone hasn't heard from their giver.....that might be me:) Can't wait to start knitting!

Got yarn?

I do! From my pal's online pictures, I deduced the colors she may like. I've sent her an email, but haven't heard back. Hope she's on a wonderful vacation somewhere!

Meanwhile, I went to a new LYS today (new to me) and picked up some lovely Colinette Jitterbug in a beautiful color called Fruit Coulis. I hope she likes it! I wasn't completely altruistic though, since I bought a skein in Blue Parrot for myself. Who could resist such softness and wonderful colors? Seriously!

I haven't heard from my pal yet, but hope to soon. I've decided that the takealong knitting for my cruise (we leave on the 12th!) will be socks and dishcloths. Between the two, I should have plenty to keep me occupied.

Last Year's Socks

Hey all!

Since we're all on the subject of socks and sockapalooza, I wanted to share the socks I made for last year's event.
Entries with details on the socks can be found here and here. The stitch pattern is a simple two row stitch pattern, which can also be found in Vogue Stitchionary, Vol. 1 under the name "small herringbone rib."
Details on the stitch pattern used can be found here, or if you would like a more explicitly written pattern, you can check out this blog.

Over the past year, I've made the socks in several different yarns and colors. This one is my favorite pair, using Koigu:
And here is another pair I made using a striped Regia yarn.
I have unfinished pairs of socks in this stitch pattern throughout my house...
This is one of my favorite patterns because it works with any type of yarn - solid, varigated, or striped - and it's a very simple, elegant pattern. You can also easily adjust your gauge depending on the yarn thickness. The visual interest is there and knitting it up is a lot less boring than just a 2x2 rib. The fit is snug due to the stitch pattern and the way it's worked like ribbing. I'm sure if you just try it, you'll like it a lot, too!

Also see the entry on the socks my sock pal made for me! They were made using the Elfine pattern (I think it's listed in the sidebar). That is all. Carry on...

Hello out there!

Wow, this is exciting - I got my pal's info earlier this week, and she likes the same colors as me! This will make it really easy to pick out a yarn, at least - I think I have a skein in my stash that I will use. But I still have no idea what pattern to do - I hope inspiration strikes soon, because I want to get started. Hello? Patterns? Any one out there going to inspire me? Must go looking for inspiration this weekend...

And if my pal is out there, hello! I haven't heard from you yet, but I hope you're watching!

Jen

Yay!

I'm so excited about this sockapalooza! It's my first swap of any kind. I don't have a blog but look forward to seeing everyone's incredible work!

hello!

Finally, I can post! Didnt receive any message from the gal who'll knit for me unfortunatly. But I know what my pal wants so Ill do some yarn shopping Friday at the Lys. She's living somewhere up north so Ill choose some 100% wool or merino wool. Oh , btw, I just went to a blind date and telling everything here at my blog... www.blueligne.blogspot.com

Hello From Nova Scotia!

This is my second round of Sockapalooza. I was in the last round. I have received my Pal's info, and my Pal has left an anonymous comment on my blog, so all is well. I am going to a Lucy Neatby workshop on the 12th with a fellow Sockapaloozer and two others. We plan on checking out the LYS in that town on the way home. I plan on looking for yarn for her socks there first. They have a wall of sock yarn, so I'm hoping something will catch my eye. (We have a yarn shop in the store where I work, but we don't have hand-dyed. That's what I'm leaning towards.) I have some patterns in mind, but I won't decide for certain until I get the yarn.

Happy knitting!

Got my sock yarn, need to make some decisions.

I received my yarn for my sock pal today. I ordered two different potential choices, and can't decide between them. It may come down to which will look better in whatever pattern I settle on. If you want to see and voice an opinion, check it out on my blog.

Test!

Consider this a test post - I'm trying to see if posting by email will
overcome the ridiculous server problems we're having.

If you see this, then it worked, and you may want to try going into your
Blogger dashboard, clicking on "Settings" for this blog, and setting a
post-by-email address for yourself!

Clicking send... fingers crossed!

My First Sockie EVER

Here he is, in all his glory. For more of the trials and tribulations that led to his successful completion, you can check in at my blog, but I'll cast on for his mate tonight. I also think I found the yarn for my pal's socks, but you can't see it! Or maybe I'll be sneaky and post it on my blog as a new stash addition, and then maybe she'll stumble across it but not know... This secret stuff is fun, and I was well-matched. I haven't gotten an email from my spoiler, but the lady I'm knitting for is awesome, and getting to know her makes me all the more certain her socks will be finished at the last minute, so that I have time to improve and really make her a treasure that fits!

I did it ! I did it ! I got to post!!

I am sooo happy to finally get through! This will be my first sockapalooza & I am really excited =) I've been knitting socks for the last 3 + years & just can't seem to get enough!! More than anything tho, I am excited to see everyone's blogs & how everyone's projects progress! And at then end of it, It's like sock christmas! What could be better?!?

Yarn Purchase made!

One of the great things about working at a yarn store is familarity with their stock...I had a pretty good idea about what I wanted for my sock pal. Koigu was my first choice, but none of the colourways were perfect, so I went with Shepherd Sock. I have pics at my blog.

I'm not sure what pattern I'll end up doing...maybe I'll design my own. Does anyone have a favourite pattern for Shepherd Sock? I'd love to hear suggestions!

Also, I still haven't heard from my sock pal. : ( I'm still hopeful though!

Testing 123

.....

Oh, dear....

I've yet to hear from my sock pal! *hopes everything's all right*

In the meantime...I'm having a delightful time scheming for my recipient...

:-D

Hi from Finland!

Yet another first timer here. I've been knitting since I was 5, so that makes it 24yrs and counting (I just turned 29). My mother was a professional knitter so I guess it was inevitable that I got early on "tangled in yarn". I've been knitting mostly socks and shawls for this past year, since my 25months old son regularly disrupts my concentration, so I need shorter rows/repeats to keep up with a pattern. :) I'm really looking forward to seeing all kinds of different patterns and yarn choices that you make!
I started a new blog today, Just a few more Stitches and I will try to update often.

Finally Here!

Well, let's see. Several days to access the blog through the invite. Now on my second day of attempting to post to blog. Gee, there's a lot of folks taking part in Sockapalooza 4. Anyway, this is my first one, and I'm so excited to be knitting socks for my pal. I've been doing some serious stash diving and pattern searching. I think I have the right yarn/pattern picked out, but I do reserve the right to change my mind.
Hope everyone is enjoying this as much as I am. Cheers and Happy Days from Yellowstone.

Got yarn

My Sock Pal will be wearing a pedicure in Handmaiden Sea Wool. I got two previously ordered skeins in the mail yesterday and love, love, LOVE this yarn. So soft, shiny and colorful. Pictures here:

Now what color would precious sock pal like...

Hi from Arkansas...

Hello to Everyone,

I moved here from Texas a year ago and I still have trouble with claiming to be from Arkansas! I have found a really lovely yarn store in Little Rock so that's made in easier :)

Anyhoo, I'm super excited to get started. I've already cast on for the Winding Cables Knee Socks in a beautiful brick red semi-solid shade of Lornas Laces. I've almost finished the cuff ribbing and can't wait to move on to the main pattern tonight. Maybe I'll get a WIP shot in soon, although it's not much to look at yet.

This is my first sockapal00za but I've been knitting socks for awhile. I can't wait to see what everyone else is knitting!

Cheers,
Liz B.

Finally!

Well, finally blogger works fine and I can say HI to everyone ;o)
First time in sockapalooza and I'm very excited about the whole sock swap thing. Can't wait to August!
I do not own a blog (yet) nor the time to have one but this could all change soon.
Time to pick up needles and start looking for a perfect yarn/ pattern for my sock pal!
Good luck everyone.
Greetings from a sunny (for a change) Ireland.

Jagna

PS: This could be the begining of a beautiful friendship ;o)

having a problem

i have tried to see my pals blog and send her an email, but am unable to do it. The email bounces and the blog says it does not exsist, askes me if i want to create it.

Have not heard from my pal yet. Hummmmmmm strange.
Jeri

Time to get Going

I've picked the yarn. Swatched the yarn. Done some math. Now it's time to get knitting! I haven't decided on the pattern yet, but at least I can work on the foot. Track my sock's adventures here! Looking forward to being inspired.

347th time's the charm

Honestly, with all the attempts it requires to post to this blog, I'm not sure how I'll have time to knit socks!
Very excited to have an international sock pal - she has the same size feet as me, so sizing shouldn't be a problem. My sock yarn stash is just too ridiculous to contemplate buying new yarn, but I haven't searched through it yet. I'm scared to get started too soon. My enthusiasm is such that the actual socks will only take a week or two and then it will drive me crazy to have them hanging aound for months until we're allowed to mail them.
Want to bet on how long I can go before I cave in and cast on? Check my blog to see if you're right.

Yarn - Check! Pattern - Check! Ready Steady KNIT!

Found the sock to knit and the yarn (although I can't remember if I have this one or the lagoon colourway... anyways it's blue). The pattern I don't actually have - it's a Sockmadness sock, but I know the lace from Barbara Walker's Second Treasury - tilting ladders - and I love what the designer has done with the the twist up the heel flap. I'm going to knit it toe up with a gusset and flap. I think it will have good give and be comfy. And I hope the colourway works well with it! I haven't heard back from my secret pal (spoilee) yet, I think she might be on hols. Hopefully I will get an email back from her soon as I have lots of questions to ask! I have alot of KIPs on the needles, but I know they won't keep me from casting on for this!

As for my own secret pal - drop me a line! I'd be thrilled to hear from you! In the meanwhile am having alot of fun reading through the entries and visiting blogs.

Come Out, Come Out, Whoever You Are...

I am so excited to get started on the socks for my pal. I contacted her via email and said hello! She is giving me so much freedom with the socks as far as fiber, color, and pattern! The possibilities are endless - it sort of makes my head spin. We seem to have similar tastes and similar sized feet, though, so that should make it easier.

I am anxiously awaiting to hear from "my" pal. If you are out there, send me a email and say hello. I would love to "meet" you even though I can't find out who you really are until August!

Got it!

Finished the 'first draft' pair today.

Loved the yarn, loved the pattern, but I left out one of the pattern rows about 1-1/2" from the ribbing. I don't think a non-knitter would even notice, but this pair will stay here. Whenever I find the cable to hook up the camera, I'll show everything here.
Buddy gets a pair done right, just as soon as I learn to count...

Bakerloo?

I've been interested in making the Bakerloo socks from the July 2006 Magknits. I love its novel construction. I'm a sucker for anything built sideways it seems. Has anyone made up a pair? I'd love to know if there are any caveats I should be aware of before plunging ahead and putting one on the needles.

Thankfully, I just finished a couple pairs of socks, so more of my sock needles are free again for this.

Seanna Lea

Found the perfect yarn...

sophie's toes

I went through my stash (love doing that) and I think my Pal is going to love this colorway. It's the first time I'm using Sophie's Toes Sock yarn. Does anyone have any feedback? I'm going to try one of the patterns from 'More sensational knitted socks', Traveling Vine. But first I need to finish some birthday socks for my brother.

Sleepless nights

Children are odd , first they wake up their parents in the middle of the night and then they just fall asleep without any problem. ( sometimes it goes with husbands too) Well that was off the topic..
Socks.. I have been thinking of them.. and I think I have found THE PATTERN . ( sorry in finnish only, and its a free finnish knitting magazine online) So one problem solved, but the next one is worse .. The YARN and of course THE Colour. Too many hard decisions to make over somebody.
Next few days maybe I'll be surfing on online stores , looking for yarn.. and I think there will be more than one skein to order . My husband has already been planning to use my yarn tash as an insulation material, to our new home ( to build an house , thats a long project..)
Already I'm planning a shopalong with fellow finnish knitters to buy knitting needles, and perhaps few skeins are in list too :D

Have a great time, and be careful there
Yours
Muoriska

Got my pal's info

I got my pal's information yesterday. Because she is so *not* picky, it will be a challenge to pick a pattern and yarn for her socks. Since I am so sock-obsessed, this is going to be an especially fun project for me.

This is one of my current sock projects - Blue Moon Fiber Arts' February installment of the Socks That Rock Club. The pattern is Inside Out, the yarn is STR Midweight in color Monsoon. I bet I'm not the only one here who has made these socks:) See details and pictures on my blog

it's a WIP..!

... okay, not so much a work in PROGRESS, but a work in planning! There's this yarn that's been calling to me for ages. I've had it in my basket at The Loopy Ewe no less than half a dozen times, but just couldn't justify buying MORE yarn until I make a serious dent in the yarn I already have. Thankfully, purple wasn't one of the colors my partner said "no way" to, so I could finally order it for her instead of me. :-D

Have you ever been just so taken with a colorway to the point where you HAD to have it? Even if just to knit up for someone else? This is that yarn for me: Schaefer Anne in "Grape Escape".

Oh, and it's going to turn into the Embossed Leaves socks, which I've already started (and frogged) in a badly-chosen variegated Koigu and loved despite the colors hiding the pattern, so I can't wait to try them again in a yarn that'll show off the gorgeous leaf motif. I'll be sure to post some WIP pictures eventually... I have a feeling I'm going to finish them WAY before August (heck, I bet I'll finish them in the next few weeks!) so holding them until send-off is going to be tough.

Hi there!

My name is Michal (pronounced like Mitchell) and I'm a first time palooza! I'm very excited to participate this time, and I'm very excited about my sock pal too. I write about myself in my little blog Yarn n Coffee, and run the little shop PaperArmadillo. I live in LA with my husband, our two cats, two turtles and one guine pig. The cat in this photo is our cutie Suki (Emmet, our second cat is newly adopted and still a bit camera shy). She loves knitting.
And today is my birthday, so I'm especially cheerful (and high on chocolate cake :) ).
It's so nice to meet you all. I'm so thrilled to be here.
Hugs!
Michal

blogger hates me

After 500 attempts to log in here, Blogger finally let me join, but now it won't let me post. :( Maybe this one will get thru!

This is my 2nd sock exchange. I was abandoned during my first one (tho later rescued by the host!), but, ever the optimist, I am trying again. ;)

Just got my partner's info, and now I'm waiting for my neutral yarn to arrive so I can dye it.

Aloha!

Hello everyone! How are you? I'm super! As in, SUPER EXCITED to participate in Sockapalooooza! This is the second time I have participated in Sockapalooza. The first time was last year and it was a really GREAT .

I hail from Hawaii: home of hot beaches, exotic flowers, and rush hour traffic (yes, we have that, too).I started making a Monkey sock using Yarn Pirate merino & tencel sock yarn in the Sadie colorway.

Based on my pal's color preferences, I think she might like this one so I will finish the first sock before I decide if it is good enough for my pal.

There are still three more months before I actually have to send out her socks, so there will be plenty of time to knit more potential pal socks and get to know her better through her blog. I'm excited...!

Ooh! I almost forgot!

You can peek in on my blog here if you like. I promise I'm not this nuts. I am just bored and I got new sunglasses. I think they're a little to big for my face, but I love them!

Let the knitting begin!

I started my sockpal's sock today. I have a pretty extensive sock yarn stash (enough to make at least 60 pairs), so I shopped the stash this morning for the perfect yarn. I came up with two, and my husband broke the tie. I sure hope that my pal likes it. I'll be knitting the Twisted Flower sock pattern from Cookie A Designs. It's beautiful, and I'll definitely be knitting a pair for myself sometime in the future. You can find my blog here.

Howdy!

Hi everyone! This is my first Sockapalooza, and I'm so super excited! A little about me ... I'm a CNA, I live with my boyfriend (who always seems interested in what I'm knitting!), and our cat, Mavy. I've completed two pairs of socks so far, and I'm finally moving beyond basic 2x2 ribbing!

I can't wait to start knitting the socks for my pal!

quietish sock knitter

Hi all,

To say that I guess this will be a busy blog is surely an understatement. So I'll just say I'm looking forward to everyone's posts! Socks are love.

This is my second Sockapalooza. Had loads of fun last time. I plan to do lots of sock knitting this summer, so this will go nicely with my plans.

You can see my blog here.

I'm in the triad (not to be confused with the triangle) and I'm really excited to be participating in my first sockapalooza. I picked out the pattern, Seize Diamondbacks (scroll down for pic), and I think I'm going to dye the yarn myself.

My pal seems to favor bright colors & lots of them in her socks and that will be fun to do. I will 'stalk' for a bit longer just to be sure I've got that right tho.

I have also heard from my pal, so much fun! I can be found here doing some quilting, gardening, and a whole lotta knitting.

it's officially a WIP...

... okay, not so much a work in PROGRESS, but a work in planning!
