2 Quick questions!

One, what are people doing in the Uk as regards to the postal strike this week? On the 2nd we are supposed to have no post being delivered but I'm not sure about taking stuff to be posted?
Two, do we reveal our selves to our sock friend when we post or at a later date? Just wanted to check before I seal my socks up!

These are my Jaywalker socks (by Grumperina: http://magknits.com/Sept05/patterns/jaywalker.htm). I really enjoyed making them -- the zig-zag design was fun, especially w/the self-striping yarn. I am blocking them now, and crossing my fingers that they will be dry in time to send them! Damn humid Boston summers. Anyway, very fun. Now off to find some tidbits to put in the package along with them!

Second Pair Sock Pal Socks Started

I started socks for my second sock pal - these are Oriel out of Sensational Knitted Socks. The pattern is a challenge for me but I've wanted to do it since I first saw it in the book.

Now if I can keep from getting distracted for a few days I'll get these done on time!

They're Finished!

Parasol Socks done in Crystal Palace Panda Cotton, Periwinkle colorway. Great little pattern and nice yarn. Yes, it's a bit splitty, but I'd use it again. Any splittiness is offset by the softness of this yarn...and the drape. Now, I'm making a pair for me!

All Done!!!

I took my sock pal's socks to Seattle where I was going for a conference and had one day to go sightseeing. I was going to take them along and take pictures. Unfortunately, I put them in my checked baggage and US Air lost my luggage (after one plane being late, another being broken, waiting for replacement aircraft, the hotel losing my reservations, etc. etc. etc.) I was in a really nasty mood on Sunday while sightseeing because on top of being dirty and uncomfortable and not being able to get pictures of my socks, I finished knitting what I brought on the plane with me and had NOTHING TO KNIT.

We took a shuttle to Bainbridge Island since my husband wasn't wearing practical shoes so we couldn't go hiking on the one day we had for sightseeing in Seattle. Just when his poor feet could take it no longer, I saw this sign:















I asked DH if he wanted to sit down so I could go exploring. Walked around the corner and saw this:















So, I went in. All of the regulars looked at me and I announced "I'm having a yarn emergency!" A very nice sales person came up to comfort me, asked me what I liked to knit and showed me to the Socks That Rock, knowing that would solve my problem. So I bought a skein of Carbon Dating, and took a picture of that on the ferry ride back.














My new yarn quickly turned into Monkey socks (because I could download the pattern from the internet and had sock needles with me from the project I finished on the plane.) Luggage showed up 2 days later....














That meant that I could finally put the finishing touches on my sock pal's socks. The yarn is Twinkletoes in Cedar Forest and the pattern is Mad to Dance. I really like the cables on the heel...

Sockapalooza Socks Done

Blogger really, really doesn't like me. I saved a post earlier since I couldn't post it then because of blogger, and now it is gone. I finished my socks up in June but was too lazy to take photos or post about it. I posted about these socks a bit ago.

I incorporated waves in the design - can you see the waves running up and down the leg ? I used Froelich Wolle Special Blauband, a Swiss sockwool, and the color ? Aqua, of course !

Flutter-by socks

I posted several weeks back that I was halfway done with my sockpal socks. Well they are all done now except for a wash before they're sent off.

Several people expressed interest in a pattern and you may have seen me make a post on the Pligg (see right column) about these socks, but I thought I'd post here too just in case some of you aren't paying attention to the Pligg. I have written up a full pattern and a chart-only version, both of which can be found on my personal blog.

I know some people will be adding additional gifts to their sockpal packages, but is this the norm and it would be rude not to? I just wonder since 1. I don't know what else to put in the package and 2. I've got an international pal and don't want it to cost a fortune to send.

Rats ! I would like to show you my finished socks, but Blogger is being more than cranky and won't let me post my picture. Any suggestions or words of advice ?

Here is a picture of the finished socks. I used the Spindle Sock pattern designed by Anna, from My Fashionable Life blog. today I tried to find the tag of the yarn I used, but I didn't have any luck. So, if I do find, I will edit this post.

These socks were started in Europe, flew across the ocean to a coast here in the US and will fly to the other coast, where my sockpal lives . And since her blog has a watery title, I decided to go with the water theme and incorporate waves into the design. I wish you could see how they run up and down the leg , but Blogger is being cranky and won't let me upload my picture. I'll try again later, maybe I can sneak in my picture when Blogger is looking the other way....

This is a date to go into history!! My first pair of socks DONE! They are not as perfect as I expected them to be, but they look pretty good for a first pair of socks. Unfortunatly, it is a little too late for me to take a good picture of them to post, so you all will have to wait for some hours for the daylight. When I post the picture I will also let you know the pattern and the yarn I used.

1st Sock Finished, but....

I used the February STR club yarn for my pal; the colors are perfect as is the weight of the yarn. I'm using the Waffle Rib pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks. Here's the finished first sock:

Do you see the problem? The colors are striping beautifully on the cuff and the foot. I don't even mind the way it's pooling on the gusset. But look at the big chunk of grey on the front.

I need some opinions; would you frog back and do an afterthought heel in order to keep the striping, or would you leave it as is? If you were my pal, would you mind the blob of color on the front? It's still early enough that I could rip and reknit.

What would you do?

A sock has got to begin somewhere

A couple of days ago, I was sitting in the break room at work, knitting on my Sockapalooza 4 pal's socks. I don't get much time at work, maybe two, three rounds (knitted two at the same time on two circs), but having so little time to knit these days - that's really important. Anyway, one of my team members goes past the door and sees me knitting (freaking muggles, stop looking at me funny and asking stupid questions unless you own a pair of needles and some yarn you're eager to learn how to turn into something useful). Here's the dialogue that followed:

Pal: "You're knitting baby booties".
Me: "No, these are adult socks".
Pal (raises an eyebrow): "They don't look like adult socks".
Me (stretching the toe and half the instep to show that the width alone negates baby socks): "But they are, look - that's the toe..."
Pal: "They don't look like adult socks".
Me (sighing to myself): "Every sock has got to begin somewhere".


These are the Spring Grass socks and I love them. The pattern is simple and easy to understant and by lucky alignment of the stars, the Lorna's Shepard Sock yarn on size #1 needles works perfectly for the gauge required to fit my pal's feet. Which brings me to the only bummer about this Sockapalooza project: my pal's feet are significantly smaller than mine, by both length and circumference. I'm talking about at least a size and a half down. I can't even have Ant try them on (yes, his feet are smaller than mine). I'm plotting making some sock blockers to her feet's specs, but it just ups my enxiaty levels about fit quite a bit. Cross you fingers for me everyone! Please?


There's another half a pattern repeat done on them now, but it's not yet worth more picture taking.

More Distractions from Sock Knitting

Dear Sock Pal,

I am done with your first sock and am halfway down the leg on the second sock. I would be done by now, but I keep getting distracted by other knitting projects.

This week I've been working on a Hogwarts scarf in Ravenclaw colors. Our LYS is trying to get a scarf done in each of the house colors because we're all excited about the new movie and book coming out this month.

What do yarn shops have to do with Harry Potter books? Well it seems that a very clever person ; ) has written a book full of patterns related to the books and movies. If you haven't seen it yet, you can look here. (I'm trying to win a prize for most shameless promotion of our hostess's publishing venture - how'd I do?)

Don't worry - your socks will be done in plenty of time!

really! I'm almost done!

my last post didn't come up...mebbe blogger hates me....well, after ripping back a whopping 4 times and changing patterns, I think I have some kick heinie socks for my pal! But I have to say--Schaefer Anne? don't really like it much. I think it's fuzzy yarn--it just kinda--bothers me. It's such a wee bit of angora, I should be ashamed to besmerch it's good name, but I just don't really like it. Live and learn! The colour rules, so I can't complain! I hope you love them, sock pal!

sock yarn raffle

Hi all! A sock yarn raffle is in place to support Annie Modesitt and family during her husband's illness. Six Weeks of Socks Contest and also a wonderful grand prize. I wouldn't have posted it here if there wasn't a chance to win some yummy sock yarn, so hopefully this is okay!

In Sockapalooza news, I am 1 repeat away from starting the heel of sock 1. I am REALLY REALLY REALLY loving Monkeys so far and I am absolutely HOOKED on Lorna's Shepherd Sock now (first time trying it.) I have a birthday in 5 days I'm trying to finish Branching Out for, so that has cramped my Sockapalooza efforts slightly, but it's full speed ahead when it's done! After learning Judy's Magic Cast-on, I never thought I would do cuff-down socks again, but really wanted to do the Monkeys and I'm so glad because it has made me realize I thoroughly enjoy both techniques.
